Geisinger Student Health Services (SHS)

Delivering the health and wellness resources our students need to thrive.

Geisinger Student Health Services (SHS) is here to minimize health-related barriers to learning.

We work to guide students toward a personal commitment to wellness and self-care that will lay the foundation for a healthy life. We’re here to help our students become self-directed and informed healthcare consumers and model patients in the community.

Services

SHS is responsible for:

  • Receiving, reviewing, coordinating and uploading all necessary health requirements for credentialing for each student, each year
  • Maintaining all reports for health screenings, immunization records, lab results, respiratory mask fitting, etc.
  • Hepatitis B booster vaccines
  • Flu vaccines
  • N-95 mask fit testing
  • Fit for duty assessments
  • Providing orders for Tb screening and drug testing

SHS has no on-site medical services with the exception of needed vaccines, over-the-counter remedies, vital signs, allergy vaccines and triage with referral, if warranted.

Confidentiality

Student records are confidential. Information can’t be released without the student’s written consent. HIPAA guidelines are strictly enforced.

By law, certain public health diseases must be reported to the Department of Health. Exceptions where confidentiality can be broken include:

  • If a student is found to be a danger to themselves or others.
  • There is reasonable suspicion of abuse to a child, elderly person or other vulnerable adult.
  • The case file is court ordered by a judge.

Provision of sensitive health services to Geisinger College students

Certain health and psychological/psychiatric issues may be sensitive, and a professional patient relationship between Geisinger College faculty and students would be inconsistent with a teacher-student relationship.

Should a Geisinger College faculty member provide a student with health services of a sensitive nature, that faculty member won’t be involved in the student’s academic evaluation or promotion.
